IT Systems Administrator

Summary of Responsibilities:

A Systems Administrator is required for our Information Technology department, located in Ottawa.

The successful candidate will take responsibility for the administration of the IT systems infrastructure that enables our lines of business.
He or she will work independently in maintaining and improving the performance and availability of our IT systems. They will also assist with the planning and implementation of changes in technology in support of future growth and equipment upgrades and replacement.

The successful applicant will have at least five years experience in an intermediate or senior IT systems support role. They will understand and appreciate the importance of:

  • Communication of technical concepts and ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences

The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge and experience in IT administration, with particular reference to the following technologies:

  • Windows Servers, 2003 and 2008
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 and 5
  • Lotus Domino
  • Microsoft Terminal Services and Remote Desktop
  • IBM X-Series Blade Centers
  • IBM Storage Area Network (SAN)
  • IBM Network Attached Storage (NAS)
  • IBM Tivoli Storage Manager and Tape Library
  • IBM Websphere
  • Cisco IOS

An appropriate combination of commitment to service, technical savvy and sensitivity to staff and business considerations.

They need to accept and meet performance objectives for their position that relate to the availability, responsiveness and effectiveness of the infrastructure under their management.

They also need to demonstrate an appropriate balance between the demands of day-to-day tasks and the need to focus on longer-term projects and assignments that require planning, time management and deadlines.

It is important that they have strong interpersonal skills coupled with an ability to communicate their ideas with assertiveness and sensitivity.

They must have an aptitude for documenting their activities and supporting a reporting structure that will include periodic written reports and other presentations. They will also be called upon to document their procedures, to diagram the infrastructure and systems topology, and to create similar schematics and work instructions.

Because the IT department has responsibilities across all Lowe-Martin locations there may be occasional need for travel within the Ottawa area and to our Toronto locations.

In order to provide appropriate service levels there may be a need to work overlapping shifts, to occasionally respond after-hours and to participate in a 24x7 scheduled on-call IT support rotation.

Education required:

A degree in Computer Science or equivalent qualifications from a community college or recognised IT training facility combined with appropriate job experience.
